The Akwesasne Freedom School's annual fundraising event is going to be held July 16-17, 2005. Below is the schedule:

Here is a message from Ceely King of the Akwesasne Freedom School regarding this event, and the school's purpose:

Tekwanonweratons/Greetings all

On behalf of the students, parents and staff of the Akwesasne Freedom School, I hope that you are all in good health and spirits.

For your information the Akwesasne Freedom School is a community based Mohawk Immersion school. For those of you not familiar with the school let me provide a brief history. The Akwesasne Freedom School was founded by parents, in 1979 who were disatisifed with how the local education systems treated and taught our children. The parents took the education of our children into their own hands and created the school with the following mission:

Through our language, the Akwesahsne Freedom School will support and encourage a process for each child to learn their roles and responsibilities as Rotinoshonni through an understanding of the Ohenton Kariwatehkwen as the core of their learning experience.

The guiding principles of Skennen, Kasatstensera, Kanikonri:io will thrive and be heard in the voices of our children for the next 7 generations.

The weekend of July 16 & 17 is the major annual fundraiser coordinated by the parents of the Akwesasne Freedom School. The Annual Dinner and Quilt Auction is a high point for all community members. It is a time to gather, enjoy good food and listen to great local entertainment. This year on Saturday we will be having an all Mohawk Challenge with local communities. The evening will be MC'd by Teddy Peters and hosted by the Kanienkeha Literacy Fluency Program. There will be a Silent Auction on Saturday with wrap-up Sunday, and the quilt auction on Sunday. Many local quilters will have their blankets auctioned off with all funds raised to go to the general fund of the Akwesasne Freedom School.

Come to Akwesasne and see the school and to enjoy good food and good fun. Plenty for all ages. This is a non alcohol and drug free event. For further information e-mail us at afs2@akwesasne.us.
