- 6th Annual Algonquian Seminar
October 8 2005, 9:00AM - 5:30PM
North Point Cultural Arts Center, Kinderhook, NY
The yearly seminar, co-sponsored by the Native American Institute of the Hudson River Valley and the New York State Museum, previously has been held in Albany. Due to an electrical test and shut-down at the Empire State Plaza on our scheduled day, this year the Seminar will be held at the North Point Cultural Arts Center, located on Route 9 at the north edge of the village of Kinderhook. The building, on the east side of the road, is brown and has porches. It is comfortable, with an auditorium on the top floor, an enclosed porch with tables on the same floor, and a large eating area below on the ground floor. Behind the building there is ample free parking.
The key-note speaker of this year's one-day event will be Edward Lenik, an archaeologist and past president of the Archaeological Society of New Jersey. He recently published a well-researched book on the little-known Indian petroglyphs and pictographs of the Northeast. He will present a definitive look at ``an extraordinary art form." A slide show on ``echoes of rock art in pictographic signatures," and talks on other Native American topics will follow during the day. Activities will include a demonstration of flint-knapping. A new project this year is an exhibit and table for Mohican genealogical research. Books about Native Americans will be available, and a new volume of Seminar papers is expected to be on hand.
Registration and coffee at 9 AM, program begins 9:30. Bring lunch (beverages will be available and there are many tables) or lunch in nearby Valatie and Kinderhook. Plan to stay for a Social Hour after the program, from about 4:30 to 5:30, a chance to look at books and exhibits and chat with speakers.
